Ashoka Dhamma

What was Ashoka’s Dhamma? These were the set of instructions given by Ashoka to his subject, which were inspired by Budha's teachings .He appointed officials and Dhamma Mahamatta,who taught people about 'dhamma' which was one of the ways to make the society a better one.

  • Ashoka and his attraction to Buddhism from his edicts, which have been found at more than 30 places throughout India, Nepal, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Almost all his edicts speak of his overwhelming concern for the welfare of his people. 
  • Ashoka carved his policy of dhamma -i.e ,a person's duty to live according to certain religious and social codes -on pillars, caves and rocks. These edicts were spread throughout the land, so that people could read and follow them. The edicts were in Prakrit, the language spoken by the masses.
  • Ashoka appointed officers, delegated powers to them, and expected them to be accountable. Special officers called dhamma matamatas were appointed to devotee themselves to the maintenance of dhamma, so that the people could obtain happiness in this world and the next.
